Dr. Doug Lisle

I love Dr. Lisle almost as much as I do Dr. McDougall. He's homey, he speaks clearly, doesn't toss in a lot of psychology mumbo-jumbo jargon in his talks, and takes the time to really explain the point he tries get across. I try to watch every interview with him, whether's it's with Gustavo as part of Dr. McDougall's webinar series, Chef AJ, as part of whatever she's calling her free interviews at any point in time, or with other people, either as part of a summit or just individual interviews.

For instance, here's the talk he with with Chef AJ as part of the recent Real Truth About Weight Loss series (I have no idea how long this will be available. Usually summit talks vanish after a set length of time.):

And here's his most recent talk with Chef AJ as part of her Healthy Living series:

And recently it was announced that Dr. Lisle is going to be doing a series of 6 LIVE talks called Escaping The Pleasure Trap, which will include material he and Dr. Goldhamer did not include in the book, The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health & Happiness. You can read what else is included in this package on the Better Life Summits page for the course. Not bad for $99. Let's see if any questions are actually acknowledged and given to Dr. Lisle to answer, unlike most of the other talks he did with Gustavo and AJ.

Now that she's doing videos with Tobi instead of Gustavo, things are a bit different, and AJ has warned that space may be limited, so if you want to be a part of it, don't hesitate because registrations could end at any time. The first talk is scheduled for April 22nd and will be every Monday through Memorial Day.

Dr. Doug Lisle - The Perfect Personality

Back when Dr. McDougall was still having those twice yearly Advanced Study Weekends, Dr. Doug Lisle was a regularly scheduled speaker. Back in September 2011 he did a talk called The Perfect Personality, that eventually made its was to his website, Esteem Dynamics, and is available free for all to watch.

He did the same talk for one of the weekly McDougall webinars on March 9, 2017:

He recently appeared at Fasting Escape Retreat Center, a health center opened up by former True North doctor Nathan Gershfeld. It's like True North for the folks in Southern California. Here it is, once again:

His artwork hasn't improved one bit. LOL

Salad Eating Advice - Nothing New Under the Sun

For those who are now in the habit of eating a pound or more of non-starchy vegetables for breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner on the advice of a certain somebody, including those "BAS - Big Ass Salads" that "if they aren't big enough that someone comments on their size, they're not big enough," and "salad should be as big as your head" - everything old is new again.

Jeff Novick, dietitian for The McDougall Program in Santa Rosa (and has many videos of his own out, both lectures and cooking videos), has written about that - and much more - for many years now, but nobody goes around quoting *him* (Aside from some of us on the McDougall message boards, that is).

Here's a blog post he wrote back in 2007 called "Shock and Awe" Salads. Good reading, as are all the other blog posts and articles on Jeff's web site. Lots of good information there, as well as his forum on the free McDougall message boards.

Imagine what life would be like for all those people if they took this advice when it was first given back in 2007 (Myself include)?

AJ's Tupperware Webinars (Edited)

Overpriced? Yeah, but Aunt Cassie was such fun to watch!

Edited to add:

And I just noticed she did another Tupperware demo but with Kurt. I haven't watched this one yet, but if he says "Shut the front door!" we'll know it's Cassie's other persona.

The lineup:

This is offered through WebinarJam. If you've ever purchased one of Chef AJ's cooking webinars you already know how to do it. If you're new to the WebinarJam *pay* webinars, be sure to follow all the instructions. After making your payment you MUST CLICK THE "RETURN TO MERCHANT" BUTTON to complete the transaction!! If you don't do that, then you're still not registered and won't be allowed in when live or get the replay links afterwards.

I can't find a schedule of who speaks when except for the general times of 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, nor what subjects they're each covering. I'm sure it'll all be interesting, no matter what.

Another Blogger Bites the Dust

Looks like Wendy Solganick is going to get rid of her old blog: http://www.healthygirlskitchen.com/ . I know I sent a lot of people there for info on the UWL food plan, and she has some great UWL- and McDougall-safe recipes there, too (That salad dressing list!!). So, I strongly advise people here who haven't saved their favorite posts from that site to go now and grab them while you can, before they all disappear forever.

Chef AJ's SPecial Guest, Dr. Alan Goldhamer

Now THIS is what a Q and A SHOULD be like!

Chef AJ holds a 4-week program in LA now and then, a live version of her Ultimate Weight Loss program. This time around she had Alan Goldhamer, DC (and Doug Lisle, PhD, too) as a special guest, and a highlight of his appearance was this one hour question and answer period, where people at the program submitted questions in writing and (Gasp!) AJ actually asked them and (Double gasp!) the doctor actually gave answers to them!

How I wish all doctors who did Q and A's followed the same format.

And how I wish I lived on the West coast and could go to True North! It's on my bucket list, right behind attendance at a McDougall 10 Day program. I can't fly, thanks to my lousy ears, so it would be a really long train or car ride to get there and back.

Dr. Goldhamer Talk

Since she got a Smartphone last summer, Chef AJ loves broadcasting live videos, and lucky for us, she did a few of Dr. Goldhamer from the 10 days she recently spent at True North.

In this video, he talks at one point of the importance of sleep for weight loss. It's as important as proper diet and exercise. I have found out first-hand how essential it is. For decades I've had insomnia, waking during the night, not able to get back to sleep. It got worse after menopause. I've always had trouble losing weight, and it got worse after menopause.

Then last year, for some reason I started sleeping better. It only lasted about 4 months, but with no other lifestyle changes - that is, the same foods, the same exercise - I lost some weight. OK, maybe only 6 pounds total of the 100 or so I still need to lose, but it was something and I was deliriously happy with it.

Then my son got a job, a job that required him to leave the house by 5am, meaning he had to wake up at least an hour before that to get ready. We live in a 5-room apartment and noise made in one room is heard in ever corner, so as soon as I heard him get up, I was awake. It got worse 2 weeks later when he caught this cold that we're still passing around and I would hear him coughing in his sleep all night long (then my husband coughing, then me coughing, then the kid again, then - - - you get the picture). So I wasn't getting decent sleep again. On a good night I would get 5 interrupted hours. Not only did I regain the few pounds I lost last year but added a few more on. I started this year 2 pounds higher than I started last year. So depressing! Last night again I was awake every hour, reaching for tissues or coughing. Since my husband has to get up for work this morning, I gave up and got out of bed around 3am so he could get some uninterrupted sleep.

Hopefully we'll get this cold/flu/Martian flu out of the house by Spring, and hopefully I can sleep for longer stretches again. And hopefully I can finally start shedding pounds - Heck, I'll take OUNCES at this point! - again.

AJ recorded another talk yesterday before she left True North, but I haven't had the opportunity to watch it yet. But whatever the subject, I'm sure Dr. Goldhamer makes it interesting.

New to the Instant Pot?

I know many people bought their first Instant Pot last weekend at the Amazon Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales, and many of those people never had a pressure cooker before in their lives and are deathly afraid to USE these new pots.

Well, Jill Nussinow, author of a number of cookbooks, including 2 pressure cooker books, to the rescue! With the help of some other ladies, Jill started a FaceBook community called Instant Pot Beginners Veg Support.

Even if you've been using a pressure cooker for a while, it won't hurt to join this community for all the support and information. It's just a few days old, so not a lot in the Photos, Links or Files sections yet, but there's already over 1200 members, so things are sure to pick up. Jill knows everything there is to know about pressure cookers, especially the Instant Pot, and will answer all your questions, help you solve any problem you have with your new toy.

Shayda Speaks in New Movie

Another movie about WFPB eating is making the rounds called "Big Change." Along with a slew of our plant based doctors and other health and cooking professionals they also interview success stories.

Here is an excerpt from the movie where they interview Chef AJ's early follower and friend, Shayda Soleymani. From the YouTube description:

Shayda Soleymani is from California and previously weighed 240lbs. Shayda talks about how she had previously been on a ton of diets and at one point in time a doctor actually told her that, “it would take herculean efforts for you to ever lose weight and to maintain that weight loss”
Since then she has lost the weight, kept it off, and is even now been able to get off her diabetes and cholesterol medicine (which was much to her doctors surprise.
In talking about her life now she said, “I’m happy, i’m back to wearing light and bright colors, i’m back to being myself again. It’s just emotionally, mentally, physically, everything has changed. It’s just nice to be out of the dumps."
Here is my conversation with Shayda and I hope that you enjoy it.

Weight Loss Wednesdays with Chef AJ

I know, I'm a day late, but I rarely catch these videos live and have to wait for replays, especially now that I'm in bed at 7:30pm and up at 3 every morning.

Every Wednesday (usually - last week it was Tuesday because of the Jewish holiday on Wednesday) Chef AJ does a FaceBook Live video titled Weightloss Wednesdays on her personal Facebook page, Chef AJ. You can send her an email (address is on the Contact page of her website) at any time or use the chat box during the talks to make a comment or ask a question.

She appreciates it if you "Like" her site, and you can sign up to get her emails which will tell you about upcoming videos and offers, too.

BTW, the Pecan Pie she talks about in this video (NOT UWL!!) is in her "Sweet Tooth" cooking webinar. You can register for it here to see the replay, cost $24.

Jeff Novick Chimes in on Infused Flavored Balsamic Vinegars

Infused Balsamic or Balsamic Crack?

2 very short excerpts from a long, informative post:

When he first brought them in, we immediately knew something was up cause they tasted WAY too good :) and clearly rung the pleasure trap bell. They just tasted too good and many people who tasted them just wanted "more." For some who tried them, they caused a spike in their blood sugars.
After looking into them, and understanding how they were made and what they were really the equivalent of, we decided against using them. We saw them basically as "added sugar" and counted them as such.
And his concluding lines:

So, if someone is using more than 2-3 tbsp of these a day, that alone is causing them to exceed my sugar guidelines.
And, if they struggle with the pleasure trap, any amount may be too much.

How to Eat Healthfully Anywhere! Live Webinar with Chef AJ.

Forgot all about this webinar last night until it popped up on my YouTube homepage this morning. Haven't even seen it yet myself.
